Sean Alan Recognized at ADDY Awards

Last Saturday (Feb. 16th) the Tucson Ad Fed held their annual ADDY award ceremony at Loews Ventana Resort. The only piece I submitted was the Tucson Survivors web site and DVD packaging graphics. It’s kind of expensive for non-members at $100 per entry but I felt it had a pretty good shot at winning something.

The Ad Fed informed entrants by email if they received an award —but not specifically to encourage people to attend the ceremony. It was such an exciting night to begin with although I would never have predicted the course of the evening’s events!

Hi, I’m Sean - a freelance graphic designer / web developer / Flash programmer who lives in Tucson, Arizona. My old Flash portfolio site was getting rather dated and nobody could remember the address so what started as a web site redesign became an entirely new brand. There were four main goals I kept in mind during planning: 1) Provide a way to showcase my work with enough space to discuss the project in depth. 2) Begin writing articles and tutorials about Internet technologies, print design and other personal interests. 3) Apply ‘Web 2.0’ technologies such as RSS to pull content from other sites in typical mashup style. 4) Build the site entirely on web standards.

A bit more biographical, this article is about how I became a graphic designer and web developer, some of formative experiences along the way and where I am projecting myself to be over the next several years.

Process serves to let you know what to expect from seanalan, what is needed from you to get the job done on time and on target, as well as all the steps that actually go into creating a highly effective web presence. Process is fundamental to providing the best product possible and allows for greater efficiency. Perhaps the best aspect is that it can be tailored to the needs of your business and budget.

Creating Opacity Masks in Illustrator

While Photoshop is probably more widely used to create web site designs, I find Adobe Illustrator faster and easier to use. In the last several versions, more and more features found in Photoshop have made their way into Illustrator such as blending modes and masking. In this article I’ll show you how to create opacity masks for some pretty sweet effects in Illustrator.
